{"id":317,"date":"2009-12-31T16:01:25","date_gmt":"2009-12-31T16:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zuschlag.us\/?p=317"},"modified":"2025-08-12T14:00:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T14:00:43","slug":"2009-christmas-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zuschlag.us\/?p=317","title":{"rendered":"2009 Christmas Letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style8\">December 31, 2009<\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">Dear Friends and Family &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">So as the Aughties or Naughties, or whatever they&#8217;re supposed to be called, draw to a close, I suppose I could agree with <em>Time Magazine<\/em> that it was the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,1942834,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Decade from Hell<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 There were some pretty rough times these past ten years.\u00a0 And yet, there were plenty of other times when I have never been happier.\u00a0\u00a02009 certainly played out that way.\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the financial hardships (no big farm projects <em>this <\/em>year!) I had a lot of fun over the past 12 months.\u00a0\u00a0 The most memorable moments of the year were those spent in the company of family and friends.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB124874235091485463.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Great Recession<\/a> may have done serious damage to my bank balance, but it did give me time for once to\u00a0balance out the rest of my life.\u00a0\u00a0Keith and I enjoyed some great trips this past year that gave us a chance to re-connect with those who are most important to us (okay, the cynics among you might be thinking &#8220;yeah, well maybe, but it also gave you a chance to save on hotel bills too!&#8221;).\u00a0\u00a0 Weddings, funerals, big birthdays and small ones, holiday celebrations, grand dinner parties and simple picnic lunches this past year all underscored the point poignantly &#8211; family and friends keep you happy when times get tough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\"><strong><span class=\"style13\">January<\/span><\/strong> started qu<span class=\"style5\">ietly enough.\u00a0 Inaugural activities in DC brought visits from my brother Wayne and his family from Chicago for a few days, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eichlernetwork.com\/socal_rancho.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Thompson<\/a> from California. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><strong>\u00a0January Photos<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"metaslider-id-8099\" style=\"width: 100%; width: 100%;\" class=\"slide-8115 ms-image \" aria-roledescription=\"slide\" aria-label=\"slide-8115\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zuschlag.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_3481_edited-1-600x600.jpg\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" alt=\"\" class=\"slider-8099 slide-8115\" title=\"IMG_3481_edited-1\" \/><div class=\"caption-wrap\"><div class=\"caption\">I'm very happy to see everyone.<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"style5\">The first week in <\/span> <strong><span class=\"style13\">February<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style5\"> saw us in Los Angeles.\u00a0 I have to admit that I&#8217;d never been a big fan of southern California in the few times I&#8217;d been there before, but Keith wanted to show me his old stomping grounds, and so I went with an open mind.\u00a0\u00a0 What a terrific time we had!\u00a0 You can read all about it <a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/LA.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HERE<\/strong> (please click here and read it!<\/a>).\u00a0 I&#8217;m looking forward to the next time already.\u00a0 The end of February was tinged with sorrow as we lost two good friends, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappnews.com\/news\/2009\/feb\/26\/two-rappahannock-friends-treasures-die-within-48-h\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claudia and Richard Lykes<\/a> within days of one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><strong>\u00a0February Photos<\/strong> (click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Feb09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style16\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Feb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style5\">This year&#8217;s lambing season reached its peak in early <\/span> <strong> <span class=\"style13\">March<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"style5\">.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s crop of 78 lambs came mostly without incident and was probably the smoothest of any we&#8217;ve had in the past 12 years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I stopped having birthdays years ago, but that didn&#8217;t stop Keith from taking me to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theinnatlittlewashington.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inn at Little Washington<\/a> for an extravagant birthday dinner.\u00a0\u00a0Not to be outdone, friends Heike and Richard surprised me with a cozy birthday dinner at their home in Washington, DC too!\u00a0\u00a0 We also had a great visit on the farm from Keith&#8217;s niece Rebecca and her family, and Keith&#8217;s sister Barbara proved to be the best shot on our firing range!\u00a0\u00a0 In a manic week of tree planting, Keith and farm manager Jeremy helped me plant over 700 seedlings of Hornbeam, Hackberry, Red maple &#8220;Autumn Glory&#8221;,\u00a0Washington Hawthorne, Scarlet Oak, Swamp White Oak, Chestnut Oak,\u00a0 sugar maples, loblolly pines, dogwoods, redbuds,\u00a0and four different types of Virburnum (whew!) all over the farm.\u00a0 Years ago I had made a promise to myself that I would have everything on the farm planted and landscaped by age 50 so I could pretty much just collapse after that and watch everything grow for the next 30 years or so.\u00a0\u00a0 Since time is rapidly running out on that plan, we planted with a vengeance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now to see if they&#8217;ll actually grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><strong>March Photos<\/strong> (click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style17\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Mar09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style18\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/mar1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style5\">Spring sprung in<\/span><strong> <span class=\"style13\"> April<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"style5\">like it does every year.\u00a0 And every year that means sheep shearing, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-dominion-hounds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ODH point-to-point races<\/a>, and an increase of activity in the local real estate market.\u00a0 All of these happened except the latter.\u00a0\u00a0 So, this year Keith and I took some time to drive down to Tryon, NC to visit my mother for a long weekend and the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blockhouseraces.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockhouse races<\/a>.\u00a0 We checked out nearby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearsonsfalls.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pearson Falls<\/a>, went to a party at Trip &amp; Alan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/campfirewater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camp Firewater<\/a> and poked around Asheville on the way home.\u00a0\u00a0 We also started a new spring tradition with the creation of the <a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Garden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Touchstone Community Garden<\/strong> (please click here to read more about this!<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><strong>\u00a0April Photos<\/strong> (click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Apr09\/index.html\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style19\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/apr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\"><strong><span class=\"style9\">May<\/span><\/strong> was wet.\u00a0 It rained constantly and even forced the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rccava.org\/pages\/gala-2009.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RCCA gala<\/a> indoors.\u00a0 But the garden grew, and grass finally covered last year&#8217;s earthmoving projects.\u00a0 In between the raindrops I managed to have some real estate activity and we were able to make some hay at the end of the month.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/piedmontvirginian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piedmont Virginian<\/a> gave us a nice write-up and Chris Hall visited the farm. We also got to spend time with Keith&#8217;s rock star nephew\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/jeffreyzona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeff Zona<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><strong>\u00a0May Photos<\/strong> (click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style21\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/May09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style24\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/may.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">Summer began cool and rainy in <strong><span class=\"style9\"> June<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the rain, we made more hay and tended the growing garden, and weaned lambs.\u00a0\u00a0 Keith&#8217;s birthday dinner on the 15th was all taken care of by his sisters Barbara &amp; it one of the coolest Julys on record in Virginia.\u00a0 Every day seemed like a picnic, and none more so than the 4th.\u00a0 My old housemates Steve Loucks and Ann Marie Pulsch came out to the farm for a picnic on the 3rd.\u00a0 Ann Marie prepared all the food, so you know it was good.\u00a0\u00a0 We started Independence Day at a neighbor&#8217;s pool party cook-out, then headed over to watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappnews.com\/news\/2009\/jun\/11\/fourth-july-celebration-offers-big-bucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> local fireworks<\/a> with the rest of the County and finished up the evening by watching the musicians and singers of the first annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castletonfestival.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castleton Music Festival<\/a> cut loose in a massively entertaining free-form late night jam session (who knew opera singers were so wild?).\u00a0\u00a0 The great thing about the day was that it was all right in our own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitrappahannockva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backyard<\/a>, we had world-class fun, and it was FREE!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What&#8217;s not to like about that in a recession?\u00a0\u00a0 We were so impressed with the talent of the young musicians who had gathered from around the world to participate in the Castleton Festival, that we even bought tickets to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/14\/arts\/music\/14beggar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Festival performance<\/a> of Britten&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Washpostlucretia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rape of Lucretia<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Perhaps not the most light-hearted opera, but amazing music nonetheless!<\/p>\n<div id=\"avery\">On the 17th we flew out to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonomavalley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sonoma, CA<\/a> for a three day weekend to celebrate the wedding of my old friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.megaagent.com\/Avery_Rick\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Avery<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Rick and I have been friends for 25+ years and it was great to see him finally get hitched.<\/div>\n<p>Between the rehearsal dinner and wedding, we managed to sample some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.napavintners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Napa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonomawine.com\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">Sonoma&#8217;s<\/a> best wines (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stagsleap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stag&#8217;s Leap<\/a> was by far our favorite vineyard and appellation) and then spend half a day in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Our SF adventure started with an amazing brunch at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zunicafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuni Cafe<\/a> (still the best in town) and an incredible tour of the city by good friend <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/petersisson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Sisson<\/a>, and ended with dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sprucesf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spruce<\/a> (which didn&#8217;t quite live up to its billing).\u00a0\u00a0 It was an all too short a trip, but it was wonderful to watch Rick &amp; John\u00a0tie the knot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><strong>July Photos <\/strong>(click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/July09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style11\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Julyphot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"632\" height=\"447\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style13\"><strong>August<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"style5\"> finally brought some some summer heat, but still it remained relatively mild as we brought in our third cutting of hay.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sadly, our swans Castor &amp; Pollux met an untimely end.\u00a0 Someone or something tried to capture the swans and were successful with Pollux.\u00a0\u00a0 We found Castor in a neighbor&#8217;s forest looking very bewildered.\u00a0 He spent the next few weeks never venturing very far from the house, as if to reassure himself that we&#8217;d provide him protection.\u00a0 One night coming home we found him lying dead near the front door.\u00a0 No sign of trauma, but perhaps he felt too alone without his brother.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">Later in the month we had an awesome dinner at friends John &amp; Diane MacPherson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fosterharris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foster-Harris House<\/a>.\u00a0 We wanted to get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Foster-Harris-House-Cookbook-MacPherson\/dp\/057800108X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> John &amp; Diane<\/a> together with our foodie friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matthewlyonsphotography.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Lyons<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alchemycaterers.com\/about-carla-hall-caterer-washington-dc\/carla-hall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Carla Hall<\/a> and our TV friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgeworkmedia.com\/edgework.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard &amp; Heike Wells<\/a>.\u00a0 Everyone had a wonderful evening and, who knows?, a TV show might just be the result.\u00a0 At the end of the month we went north to visit friends.\u00a0 We took the train to Boston and from there rented a car to drive to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strawberybanke.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portsmouth, NH<\/a> to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alibris.com\/search\/books\/qwork\/7453530\/used\/A%2520Treasury%2520of%2520Anglican%2520Art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> George Eatman<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 From there we drove to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainevacation.com\/regions\/Nobleboro-Maine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Nobleboro, ME<\/a> to visit friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolrowan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carol Rowan<\/a> &amp; Deb Gross and our Virginia country neighbors the <a href=\"http:\/\/rappvoice.com\/?p=4572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicklins<\/a>, before heading down to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ogunquit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ogunquit <\/a> to visit my old housemate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.squillace-law.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scott Squillace<\/a> and his husband Shawn.\u00a0 We had the best time sponging off our generous friends and taking in all the amazing scenery.\u00a0\u00a0 I hope we didn&#8217;t abuse their hospitality too much, &#8217;cause we&#8217;d love to get invited back next year (hint, hint).<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><strong>August Photos <\/strong>(click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style21\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Aug09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style25\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Aug.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">As usual, <span class=\"style9\">September<\/span> was once again a hugely busy month.\u00a0 We hit the ground running after New England.\u00a0 The main focus was to get the farm in shape for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clunforestsheep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NACFA <\/a>meeting, which this year was hosted by all the members of our local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappfarmsva.com\/co\/about.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lamb co-op<\/a>.\u00a0 In between mowing, trimming, and cleaning, we had a chance to experience the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappnews.com\/news\/2009\/jul\/30\/popular-taste-rappahannock-dinner-sept-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Taste of Rappahannock<\/a>,\u00a0 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonhillraces.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thornton Hill Hounds Point-to-Point<\/a>,\u00a0 co-op partner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappfarmsva.com\/co\/Stoney.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Niessen&#8217;s<\/a> 50th birthday party, and other social events.\u00a0 In the midst of all this activity I somehow managed to get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/lyme-disease\/DS00116\/DSECTION=symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lyme disease<\/a> again &#8211; the same time as last year &#8211; and had to dash to Chicago for quick business trip.\u00a0 The annual sheep meeting went off without a hitch (well, it did rain most of the time), and we had a great group of people come from all over &#8211; including the UK&#8217;s top <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clunforestsheep.co.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clun Forest Sheep<\/a> breeder, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/Mike_Eckley\/571187357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Mike Eckley<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 We finished the weekend by having Dr. Martin Dally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toprams.com\/lai.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A.I.<\/a> over 30 ewes with semen from a ram in Mike&#8217;s flock in Wales.\u00a0\u00a0 We put another 50 ewes in various breeding groups, so we&#8217;re hoping the results will be 100 or so top quality lambs born in late February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><strong>\u00a0September Photos <\/strong>(click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Sept09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style14\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/sept2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\"><strong><span class=\"style9\">October<\/span> <\/strong>was even more hectic than September.\u00a0\u00a0 It just kept coming at me! The month started with great friend and old housemate <a href=\"http:\/\/results.active.com\/pages\/displayNonGru.jsp?rsID=86781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Ann Marie Pulsch&#8217;s<\/a> big birthday bash, then a quick visit from my brother Geoff and his family, then Keith&#8217;s mother&#8217;s 87th birthday party, and non-stop real estate busy-ness, including a one day trip to Denver.\u00a0 Unfortunately all the real estate activity didn&#8217;t end up in any exciting sales or listings, but it did allow me to really appreciate the outstanding fall color this year.\u00a0\u00a0 The colors in town were amazing.\u00a0\u00a0 Speaking of amazing, I never knew what amazing pain a dying nerve could generate in your teeth until I had to have an emergency root canal in late October. That hurt!\u00a0 The pain was eased by a Halloween weekend visit by my old grade school friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caravette.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Caravette<\/a> and his partner Patrick.\u00a0 Chris has been obsessed with airplanes since he was a little kid, so it was great to see the new annex of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasm.si.edu\/museum\/udvarhazy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air &amp; Space museum<\/a> with him.\u00a0 We had great visit with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><strong>\u00a0October Photos <\/strong>(click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style10\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/oct09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style20\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Oct09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">The death of my Uncle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/chicagotribune\/obituary.aspx?n=lawrence-j-powers&amp;pid=135431226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lawrence Powers<\/a> brought the family together in early <strong><span class=\"style9\">November<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 It was good to see all of my cousins and my siblings together in Chicago.\u00a0 My sister Jen even flew in from Germany. Though it was a sad occasion, we all enjoyed the chance to catch up with each other&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">While I&#8217;m officially too old to have favorite pop groups, I&#8217;ve been grooving to the tunes of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z1m66vjAFRU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hidden Cameras<\/a> for the past couple years now.\u00a0\u00a0 When I heard that they were touring North America, I jumped at the chance to see them in DC.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dragging Keith and friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redtruckbakery.com\/index.cfm?action=aboutUs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Brian<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dwightmcneill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dwight<\/a> along, we checked out the scene on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/09\/07\/AR2006090700385.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> H Street Corridor<\/a> where all the kids are hanging out these days.\u00a0\u00a0 While we were twice the age of most people there, we had a great dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stickyricedc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sticky Rice <\/a>and really enjoyed the <a href=\"http:\/\/exclaim.ca\/musicreviews\/latestsub.aspx?csid1=139&amp;csid2=870&amp;fid1=42856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> concert<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockandrollhoteldc.com\/portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock and Roll Hotel<\/a>.\u00a0 Thanksgiving this year was a quiet affair with Keith&#8217;s mother and\u00a0brother Christopher and sister Yvonne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style12\"><strong>\u00a0November Photos <\/strong>(click on photo below to see the rest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style21\"><a href=\"\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Nov09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"style22\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Alan\/Documents\/My%20Web%20Sites\/alanzuschlag\/Letter09\/Nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"style5\">Even though there weren&#8217;t as many lavish Christmas parties to attend this <strong><span class=\"style9\">December<\/span><\/strong> I still managed to gain my traditional 5 lbs of holiday weight.\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t know how I did that, but it gets harder and harder to take it off each new year.\u00a0\u00a0 Keith surprised me with a quick pre-Christmas train trip to Philadelphia for a few days.\u00a0\u00a0 We did the usual tourist stuff and had great food and fun.\u00a0 Local predictions of a long hard winter came true mid-month when we had the <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/achenblog\/2009\/12\/blizzard_of_2009_photos_ii.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Blizzard of &#8217;09<\/a>, or &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/thelede.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/19\/snowpocalypse-now-and-then\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snowpocalypse<\/a>&#8216; as some called it.\u00a0\u00a0 For us it was actually a lot of fun to get nearly 2 feet of snow in 24 hours.\u00a0 We had enough warning to plan for the event and make sure the critters had enough food and we had enough wood split to keep the fireplace going for 2 days.\u00a0 Keith made a big vat of his famous pasta sauce with meatballs and we had plenty of red wine and Netflix.\u00a0 What more could you want in a snow storm?\u00a0 Good thing we had a big John Deere tractor with a bucket to plow ourselves out though.\u00a0 I was so proud of myself for plowing out the farm drive (0.6 miles to the road one way, and 0.4 miles the other) that I didn&#8217;t even stop to think that the County might not have plowed the road itself (which it hadn&#8217;t).\u00a0\u00a0 We convened a meeting of the venerable South Poes Sledding Society (SPSS) the next day, but only a few stalwart members showed up &#8211;
